We knew this day would come

Brian!

Begin the countdown to cosmetic mutilation. It’ll be the ubiquitous tattoo-ing of the late 21st century. You heard it here first.

    Wow…just…wow.

It does make me wonder though, were such a thing going on in Robo's world, where it became the "in" thing to start strapping on robotic bits, would this annoy him? Or would he say "screw it", and introduce his own line of "Robo-approved" limbs? I mean, his hands work better than any that anybody else would make, don't they?

And has Robo ever done the equivalent of plastic surgery to himself? Upgrades to make himself look slightly different and all that.

Sorry, these are the kind of things that I think of. It's been a slow day.

I don't know what Robo's response would be. On the one hand, I think he'd be aware that technology will play and greater and greater role in the lives of people, so that kind of thing is inevitable. But it's one thing to know that and another to experience it. Especially since Robo is a worldwide celebrity, there'd be that extra level of worrying about people doing it because he's making it chic to do so. Bleh.

Robo has had tons of upgrades of the years, both internal and external, but he always sticks with his original appearance. Robo is vain and considers himself to be very handsome, so there's no need to make changes.

I love that Robo is vain. It's one of the aspects that makes the character gel with me.

As for the arm… ee-gad. I think the concept is a solid one, but this whole "connected to the central nervous system" thing… one thing to say it, another to make it happen. Is it truly possible to have a bunch of Edward Elrics walking around?

I will totally be lopping off an arm when this technology becomes available -too cool for school. Not my almost-Eisner arm though.

So if he's done upgrades, that means he knows exactly what makes himself tick, right? Has he ever tried to build himself a…companion? I mean, we know he has moments where he regrets watching everybody get old and die around him…so if it's within his ability to do so, why wouldn't he? Is it because his vanity makes him think that his own "specialness" would be reduced? Is he afraid that the new construct wouldn't be as able to take care of itself, and would therefore fall into the "wrong" hands?

(Sorry for the questions…I just had this image of Robo as Dr. Frankenstein in my mind when you said he's been upgrading himself, and I can't get it out of my head)

Those are all good questions. the problem is that Robo has no idea how his mind works -Tesla wasn't really sure himself, but i don't want to give anything away. So while Robo has a keen interest in robotics and A.I., he can't make himself a buddy.

I think everyone should go read Johnathan Hickman's "Transhuman" right now…

Basically, we'd already have tons of implants in our brains and sensory organs if we could solve, among other things, the risk of infection. Robo doesn't have that problem. So, it's easy for him to improve or expand, say, his vision.

But this doesn't imply that he knows how his AI works or that he could replicate it. It's like how you can install a program on your computer even if you had no idea how to build one from scratch yourself.

I like the one here http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/11/health/research… Check out the video on the left. Has a cool cyberpunk feel with all the exposed wiring and stuff. We are officially living in some kind of insane future world.

That's not true! NO flying cars – no future world.
