Damn Your Icy Hide, Canadian Print Industry!

Brian!

Bad news first: the printer screwed up and Volume 3′s release is delayed. We’re now aiming for April 22nd, but I can’t guarantee that date yet. I’ll update with more info as I get it. The whole thing is a major pain in the ass because we finished the issue ages ago, but unfortunately we do not have perfect psychic control over the printer to force them to do our bidding.

Yet.

The good news: remember this super bitchin’ poster?
Photobucket
Well, now you can buy it! So go goddamn buy it already!

Not quite the news: is it just me or was Monsters vs. Aliens incredibly weak? There were a couple decent moments/gags I guess, but the vast majority of it was entirely too forced and hollow. I can’t say it was a complete waste of time though. Hugh Laurie’s real accent always makes me think of Jeeves and Wooster and there’s no complaining about that.

Lastly: this.

You know what I wonder from the social experiment angle? If the tweenbot didn't have the smiley face to anthropomorphize it, would people still empathize and help it get where it wants to go?

    Bought mine!

Interesting thought on the tweenbot too…I wonder what would happen if they were to try it out with some different (angry, sad, none) faces and see what happens.

Didn't they do this with issue #1 of the volume 2 as well?

Can we shoot them? Or do we have to wait until they do it a third time?

We've had three books delayed for a week each. I believe it was both trade paperbacks and an issue from Vol 2, possibly the first one as mentioned above.

These things just happen. It's unfortunate, but once Red 5 turns our materials over to the printer, there's nothing we can do.

Hey man, no complaints here! Hell, one week late due to stuff that's in no way your fault is still a TON better than the treatment we fans get from some of the bigger guys. I mean, yes. I know they're just "entertainment", and that there really are more important things out there…but dammit if I were to promise I'd have something done by date "X" at my job, and I just watched as the date sailed by; I'd expect them to fire me.

It's one thing when you do your job, and turn in your work, and then something happens. That's just the way life works out sometimes. It's something else entirely to over-commit and then not even bother to do the work. I mean, how long have we been waiting for that last issue of Planetary? And he's JUST turned in all the artwork supposedly as of last week.

I understand that as a freelance artist, sometimes you take on a bunch of work because you never know where your next job is coming from…but if you take on so much that you can't do it, then all you're going to end up doing is hurting your own reputation and make people not WANT to work with you again.

Woo…sorry…bit of a rant. Not directed at you guys at all. Again, you did your jobs, somebody else screwed the pooch. I can understand and respect that. That happens. It's the people who don't even seem to try that piss me off.

Just got notice that my poster has been SHIPPED!

    Now we wait…

Because I wasn't paying 3 times what I paid for the poster to get it to me in less than 2 weeks at the earliest.

Oof! Yeah, I hate it when shipping prices go nuts like that. Especially when the cost rockets out of control for, like, one day sooner. No thanks, I can wait.

    Hope you like it!

I've started reading Captain America by Brubaker recently, since I never read it before. I'm buying all the trade paperbacks in order, and I got Red Menace vol 1. It had the 65th anniversary issue for Cap, and I thought, wow, bright colors, bold cartoony lines, jokey dialogue…why does this remind me of Atomic Robo? (That's not exactly what Robo is like but all the other Captain America issues have been drawn dark, shadowed, photorealistic.) Sure enough, I get to the end of the issue and he fights a two-story nazi robot with a giant heart encased in glass, Metroid-style. Wow.

Actually I rather liked Monsters vs Aliens. *shrugs* I also like Dieney's Atlantis and Treasure Island, which not too many people seemed to dig.

But I sure could have done without the B-52s in the soundtrack. I'm of the opinion that the only aesthetically pleasing noise they could possibly make would be to be dropped *from* a B-52.

Methinks I'm gonna have to buy a poster!

It doesn't look like Robo's gonna be here this week either. It's not on my local shop's list of what Diamond has shipped to them for Wednesday. They get Tuesday delivery, so I can have somebody check and get back to me, but it's usually a pretty accurate list.

Oh yeah. I posted it on Twitter but haven't had enough content to justify a whole post here. Diamond confirms Robo Vol 3 #1 will be available on the 29th. It's two weeks late, BUT on the bright side that's the same weekend as FCBD and I don't mind telling you that our story will make anyone who reads it demand to buy more issues. So, hey, the printer screwed us, but it'll work out in the end!

Well, that's something at least. On the plus side, I get to read two Robo stories in the span of a week, and it's not even my birthday!

Is the FCBD story going to be up online like the first? Because I can only read the FCBD's online because I have no comic book store around my area (or anything that does that…:( ).

And I don't want to order something thats suppost to be free….

Sad to hear that Monsters vs. Aliens wasn't very good. I remember seeing a preview and thinking that the concept just HAD to make for a good, fun movie…but every subsequent preview showed that it was a movie trying too hard to be funny, when the concept alone would be funny enough if played straight.

It will probably go online at some point. Right now we plan to package it with the trade paperback to Vol 4 because one of its issues is the story of what happens immediately afterward.

Is that a hint at Dr. Dinosaur's involvment? Scott's sketches for the character are fantastic and sure he'll be an instant fan favourite.

So I got my poster in the mail yesterday. It was sitting in front of my door when I got home from work (okay, the comic shop, which I went to directly from work) in its little mailing tube, and I couldn't wait to get it open.

Then I get it out of the tube to find a gigantic and incredibly noticeable crease right down the middle of the poster. It's like they put a rubber band way to tight around the center, and then tried to take it back off. That's what I paid them $7 in shipping for?

I'm going to try and iron the thing back into shape, but the actual damage is fairly severe and I don't know how well it's going to work. I know it's nothing you guys are responsible for, and I fully intend to make a complaint to Split Reason, but I thought it important to make sure you knew.

Damn, that sucks. I hope min doesn't turn out like that, seeing as I paid $15 shipping and have to wait 3 months or whatever. You should contact them. Why pay for damaged goods?

I've contacted them. I don't know if anything will come of it, but we'll see. I was honest about my disappointment, but I still tried to be respectful in tone…so we'll see how that does. The damage is severe enough that I really am a bit concerned that I'm not going to be the only person affected. But at the end of the day, stuff like this happens sometimes, and it all comes down to how you deal with it. I prefer to deal with it like a reasoned adult…there's too much of the other kind of "dealing" out here on the internet.

I may take a picture when I get home tonight for people to see though. We'll see. I was so tired when I got home last night, that I still haven't read yesterday's books, and both Invincible and Detective Comics came out. Man's gotta have his priorities.

unrelated to this, but I just read the time travel bit on 8-bit. And here, I thought it was just me.
Maybe it's being a writer, but it seems like my dreams are always these big complex affairs with well-drawn stories, and three-act plots.
And I've totally been woken up by the inevitability of causality before.
