3.1 preview, 3.4 pre-order, and something amazing

ComiXology has a five page preview of Atomic Robo and the Shadow From Beyond Time #1. Not that ti matters, because you are buying it today!

Meanwhile, the fourth issue is is now available for pre-order locally and online — Team Robo likes Heavy Ink, but you’ve got options.

Lastly, if you ever wondered what Atomic Robo would look like in statue form, this is a start.

What I can tell you about it so far.

  • The final version will be in color.
  • It will be a limited run. If interest is high enough, we’ll make more eventually.
  • It will be available later this year.
  • I’m not 100% sure on the price, so I won’t quote anything. It will be under $100 and probably less than $50.
  • It will be available for purchase online only. This may change with subsequent runs, but no guarantee.

SOLD! Now come my fanboy-gasm of questions. I apologize for them in advance.

So is this the final, "approved" version, or is it still wip? And who did that lovely sculpt? I'm also curious as to what the material will be. Polystone would be nice, and seeing as you said elsewhere that it would be under 5", could conceivably come in under $50, depending on piece count and paints. Doing it in PVC would be a ton cheaper per unit to produce, but I have a fear that he's going to end up a little top-heavy for those legs as a PVC, and you may quickly have problems with figures that point at the floor.

Again, sorry…I've been around toys and statues a little too long, I think. Feel free to ignore me if I'm being annoying. I know that happens.

      Well that's just fantastic!

I'll probably need 2. I'm definitely having one and my brother will most likely require one as well. It will be available outside the States right?

Resin, which I assume is a PVC resin, but I don't know nuthin' about makin' no toys. It'll come with a stand which should help with balance issues.

Ah the statue is seriously cool. Are his eyes going to be empty like that or filled? Love to see the painted version.

Without getting too much into explanations, "polystone" is actually another term for "resin". It's what most of the statues you see are made out of. In fact, I just bought a polystone Rocketeer bust a couple weeks ago myself. (which I'll link here for reference: http://tinyurl.com/ddurfp )

PVC (or polyvinyl chloride…which sadly, I did not have to look up) is becoming a more popular material for some statues because it's lighter and cheaper, and in some ways more resilient than polystone. It's more difficult to break a piece off of a PVC statue, but they are a lot more susceptible to the elements, and if memory serves, don't take paint as well. Kotobukiya is the biggest company I know of that uses a lot of PVC for their statues (like this Batman one: http://tinyurl.com/cdkbjg ). Koto is also known for their "fine art" statues, which are done in cold-cast porcelain and just beautiful to behold. Here's one of those that I broke down and ordered that should arrive later this summer: http://tinyurl.com/dhk92u

When you say that it's going to come with a stand, do you mean the pole and square base that he's currently sitting on; or will there be an "Atomic Robo" logo-type stand, and maybe some metal feet pegs to stand him up? Because if he's polystone, you could absolutely get away with putting a peg in each leg and out the bottom of the foot to stand him up, which keeps him from looking like he's taking it in the rear…not that there's anything wrong with that.

Do you know who's doing the paint yet? I used to know a guy who does a lot of action figure paint-masters. Did a lot of the early Marvel Legends, etc…he tends to be super-busy, but he's about the best there is. Not sure what he charges though.

Scott's style has changed a bit since then. He used to draw Robo with human-like proportions, but now he's a bit more cartoony.

      Let's cut the foreplay:
GI-Joe-style action figure with articulated shoulders and swappable guns.
      Made from solid titanium.
      (it weighs thirty-six pounds)

Red 5's got some Star Wars cred to its name, yes? Maybe they can cut a deal with Hasbro or something…

Okay, in my head that was a joke, but as soon as I wrote it down, it suddenly occurred to me that that kind of thing would be PERFECT for Mattel through Mattycollector.com. Mattycollector is supposed to be all about those of us that are fanboys first, yeah? How awesome would it be to have them do some indie properties like they do He-Man? Especially if they can put them into scale with DCUC. I mean, they're about to do Ghostbusters as an internet-only line, so we know they aren't opposed to that aspect of things.

Um…I think I may actually bring this up to a person or two…can't believe I didn't think about it before.

So…my local comic shop did NOT receive their Atomic Robo issues this week. When I went in, they handed me my stack, and I did my little OCD-geek thing and checked to see if they missed anything, and didn't find it in there.

I asked if they were messing with me "again", because they like to pretend that they didn't get the books I most rabidly support just because they think it's funny (I used to work for the company, and am still quite close to all the employees there, they wouldn't do that to just some guy off the street)…I got a "no, seriously", and then he showed me their inventory list, which didn't even have the book listed.

Because of the way their distribution works, it has happened before where certain books didn't make it out the door in time to make it to all the stores for Wednesday (they get Tuesday delivery that they go and pick up from a central location), but it doesn't happen often. If it weren't for Astounding Wolf-Man and the Muppet Show comic I'd have been really upset.

Looks like it's mostly East Coast folks who got screwed out of Robo this week. It'll come at you next week. SO LAME.

See, that's what's kinda weird. Diamond has 3 distribution centers that I'm aware of: Plattsburgh NY, Torrance CA, and their new one in Olive Branch MS (which used to be in TN). The east cost is, I think, all handled out of Plattsburgh, but here in the midwest (I'm in Indiana), we're handled out of MS, and I know we are because they just opened that warehouse recently, and there was a week where re-orders were unable to be fulfilled because of the move. That's 2 out of 3 warehouses that didn't have issues to ship. Did you guys get it in Florida? Did Scott get his in NH? (By the way, if you're ever in NH, Double Midnight Comics is awesome) Both of those should be handled through Plattsburgh as well…though I'm not 100% on Florida.

Also, this comes to mind: http://tinyurl.com/c9socz
It's Bob Layton making comments that sound oddly familiar…

Yeah, I know waaay too much about how the business side of this stuff works. I used to run a comic shop, and I also used to hang out with a bunch of toy company-type folks (and I don't just mean Shocker…legitimate ones too), so I've seen most of the ins and outs firsthand.

Hell, the owner of the comic shop I used to work for once comes in and tells me that he'll be out of state for the whole weekend because he's going to MD to watch a football game with Steve Geppi. Same owner loves to brag that his Topps account # is (basically) "four". Store's been around a looooong time.
