FCBD Madness . . . in September?

Scott Wegna
fcbd-madness-in-september

Yeah I know, FCBD isn’t until May. But we were told that it was needed soon so we decided to get it out of the way before starting on Volume 4.

I thought I was done with the crazy work schedule when we wrapped up Robo 3.5 (out next week!), but we all knew that was a pipe-dream. Thanks for humoring me though.  Why all the rushing? Because I have to leave for PittCon on Thursday!! You should come and buy my shit. For a nominal fee on top of whatever you purchase I’ll even make small-talk.  Seriously I love meeting people who like what we do. If you’re going to be there you’d better come find me or my heart will be crushed. I won’t be in Artist Alley this year -Eyez gots me a fancy-pants booth.

I’m very excited for this FCBD short. Originally we were going to recycle the monster from the Digital Short we just did. That mihgt sound lame, but we loved the Yonkers Devil and so no reason not to use him again. But then I saw the bones of an 8′ tall photrusrhacidae while visiting NYC and everything changed.

This story is yet another first for Team Robo because I’m working without a script! Actually I had a script for the first few pages, but Brian was loaded down with Vol.4 so I said screw it -I’ve got this thing plotted out in my head from start to finish, let me just draw the damn thing and you can write the script afterwards. Rockin’ it old school Marvel style. EXCELCIOR!!!!

Other than that there’s nothing new to report.

Congrats to my good friends Aidan & Julie, and Rick & Kat, on the near-simultanious births of their new baby boys. I’ve been getting these strong pangs to have another child myself lately. Luckily the feeling passes quickly, but during one of those moments I would literally kill my own mother to have a second child. It’s disturbing. Also congrats to Brian #483 and Sarah who rather than having babies they have Mini Coopers and just bought a house. Much smarter really, and definitely more fun on the weekends.

I’ll leave you with a page from FCBD.

Why don't you finish scarring the child you already have first? You can always foster at a later date.

  • terencehoskins

Those pages look great! I love the second one…I admire your ability to give Robo so much character and life by using his posture and eyelids. Also, as much as I love my 5 month old boy, he's made my life exponentially harder in addition to my 9 year old. Babies are wallet vampires.

Had plans to come up to PittCon this year, since I have some really good friends that live there, but my stupid car is being a turd again…I'll have to catch you and the rest of Team Robo at another show soon!

  • Josh_B

Is that the no ink style? 'Cause those pages look great.

It is and it's great! Every page of this story is my favorite page of Scott's art I've ever seen.

Yep, no kids for us. We get plenty of agony from those around us with kids that we don't see the need to have our own. Joy. I mean joy. Plus, there's the two dogs and a cat who give us just as much love and adoration as your typical bipedal offspring, but with the added bonus of not getting arrested for leaving them in crates for 10 hours a day.

I wonder who else among your fans immediately went to the FAA N-number registry to look up N323TD. I was disappointed to find it's not registered; does it refer to anything, or am I trying too hard?

  • yayap91

The bird reminds me of the one from UP.

  • John I.G. the second

Awesome, awesome stuff, can't wait really. When's the online comic coming?

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

We got the first few color pages last night, so it should be coming pretty soon. Maybe as soon as some time next week.

  • ryankeough

Ya know, because I'm an airplane dork, I looked up N323TD and alas, it isn't being used by anything… you're good Wegnaah, it still leaves the door open to a clandestine tilt rotor operation in the lower hinterlands…

  • Scott!

@Terence: Yeah kids are like that :P

    @Josh -Yup, that's it.

@Brian 483 & Ryan- haha, dorks! N32323 was the aircraft Bartle and I were leasing for our aerial advertising company. I use “323″ a lot just 'cause. “TD” =Tesla-Dyne. I remember getting 323 home from Lawrence was one of the most confusing taxis of my life. We were told to taxi to runway 32 via runway 23/05. SO it was something like “November 32323, taxi 32, via 23 at Bravo.” but the controller couldn't spit it out, we couldn't read it back, and we were totally unfamiliar with the airport layout. Good times.

@Yayap -Well, they are both . . tall birds I guess. Man I did not enjoy that movie at all . . .

    @John -thanks!

It's rather early to be asking this, but think you guys might be able to stop by Toronto sometime next year during con season?

  • OnslaughtSix

Really excited to read this story. And Volume 4. And everything else Robo-related.

Last night I met a girl with an 8BT shirt on who claimed the only reason she doesn't read Atomic Robo is because she has no money to buy it with, so I'm lending her my TPBs. Hooray!

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

Excellent work! Hope she enjoys 'em.

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

Oh, and Jessie: outlook not so good. You people keep Toronto too far away!

  • ernie_stiner

Love the sneak peak at the new pages – looks damn fine as pencils only.

Will there be be new Wegener Sketchbook goodness available at Pittsburgh this weekend? I'll be there, but only as a visitor this year [It's Fall Craft Season for me now - I'm glad Pittsburgh is moving back to April in 2010.]

Sorry if you've already answered this, but are related to the late Danish, erotic artist, Gerda Wegener?

    e.

I believe Scott does have a new sketchbook. Drop by and find out for sure though ;D

    There's a PittCon this weekend?

…I may have to make the drive.

  • ernie_stiner

Yes, the new Sketchbook IS mighty fine, and that budget-friendly Scott even slashed the price – on Friday night no less! I saw all of the pencils-only pages from the FCBD story and they are stunning. Can't wait to see them with words and color.

So when do you guys expect the trade for Shadow From Beyond Time to be out? Been holding off on the individual issues to get that.

On a totally unrelated note; you guys heard the new Protomen album yet? Holy crap @_@

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

    December 9th and yes!

  • Josh_B

My girlfriend recently read the first Robo trade, and one of her first comments was, “Robo is cute.” This had never struck me before, but I guess it's a fair point. Do you guys seen Robo as “cute”?

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

Yes. To me, it was crucial to the book's success that Robo look, well, cute. The idea is that it would get people to pick up the book, especially the ladies since statistically an Atomic Robo cover would be the only comic on the shelves that didn't say “No Girls Allowed!”

Robo's cuteness plays on everyone regardless of gender, age, or general comics interest. People are just drawn to his design. I think Scott was more interested in designing a cool looking robot, but since the “cute” angle comes almost entirely from Robo's eyes, that gave him the rest of the 'bot to play around with. I'm still astonished by how perfect Scott's final design is. You can say I'm biased, but I rank Scott's Robo right up there with the standard Spidey costume.

  • Josh_B

I'd agree with that. I was always going to buy Robo, just because I love robots, comics and 8-Bit Theatre, but the design cinced it. I just never saw Robo as cute, so much as THE coolest looking robot I'd ever seen, even more that the Iron Giant or any of the Star Wars droids.

  • Scott!

Not as far as I know, Ernie. I think Wegener is like Smith in German.
