Obligatory Post-Move Blargh Post

Oh man, this site needs a kick in the ass. I kind of feel like I’ve got so much to say that I can’t get any of it organized enough to share with you guys.

Brian and I are still settling into our new pads, wondering what happened to our favorite tchotchkes, (“chot-ch-keys” for you non Yiddish speakin’ folk), and seriously starting to contemplate just getting rid of all those yet-to-be-unpacked boxes, figuring that we’ve lived this long without whatever the hell is in them, so they can’t be that important. Right?

I just started working again last week, and that’s in real fits and starts. The 5 days that it should have taken to finish off my new studio turned into 3 weeks, and we’re still not done. There are doors to be hung, bookshelves to be sanded and stained, a stairwell to be painted, a banister to be mounted, and a serious amount of painting mistakes to be corrected.

My little brother Dave, who’s been the real driving force behind all of this, has been incredible. I haven’t really spent more than a few hours in a row with him since I left home 16 years ago. In a lot of ways I still assumed he was the same insufferable jackass that he was when we were growing up. It turns out that he’s upgraded to only occasionally insufferable, but generally very convivial and fun to be around. His skills as a handyman and electrician are pretty fucking impressive, and I would still be sitting in an unfinished attic, surrounded by 30 years of garbage wondering what to do, if not for him.

It’s been a LOT of fun hanging out with him, and a real learning experience. Probably for both of us -I’m pretty sure he had no idea what he was doing when we sanded, stained, and sealed the wood floors either. He seemed as pleasantly surprised as I was when that turned out awesome. I know that neither one of us had ever built a giant, industrial strength, loft bed for a 9yr old before.

So yeah, it’s been cool. I’m still exhausted, and having a real hard time finding the right creative mental space to be productive again. But that will probably come in time. Like once we are truly settled -with new drivers licences, a new freelancer’s health insurance scheme, and all that boring everyday life crap.

If you follow Bri and me on Twitter you’ll have already seen this stuff, but here’s the cover for the first issue of Vol.5, ATOMIC ROBO & THE DEADLY ART OF SCIENCE, and the cover for the Vol.4 TPB: ATOMIC ROBO & OTHER STRANGENESS (incorrectly called “Revenge of The Vampire Dimension”, but fixing anything with Diamond is like trying to fix the Middle East; Im-fucking-possible).

Also, here’s a grainly and shit-tastic couple of pics of my work-in-progress studio. The Google Droid truly is the the equal of the iPhone in every way. Especially when it comes to taking really awful photos and then wondering what the fuck does it really mean when they tell me it’s a 5 mega-pixel camera? 5 piles of bullshit is more like it.

Probably has something to do with the terrible lighting -we still have raw light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. I really need to go get permanent fixtures . . .

My part of the room. For scale, that Tesladyne seal on the back wall is level with my head when I stand in front of it.

Mmmm, shiny wood floor . . . .

The Shelf of Nerdity. You can’t relly see it, but the model I used for Robo’s P-40 back in his Flying Tigers days is at the far left corner of the bookshelf. And yes, those are official Ghostbuster Ecto-Goggles complete with LEDs and official GB warning labels and stickers. =P

    Those are some sexy covers.

    WHO IS THAT MASKED MAN?!

Never mind that I know. And most people who read this blog have known for ages. Shut up.

  • Ben

Woah now, where can I acquire either of those two items in the last picture?

I'm now kind of wondering what books you're reading on that shelf.

  • Thomas S.

Awww hell yeah! Mouseguard! You sir, have excellent taste.
Oh by the way, just got issue 4.4 in the mail today. Fantastic stuff, as usual. Can't wait to see what shenanigans Robo's oldest/newest nemesis gets up to next.

    (huzzah Veritech and Tachikoma!)

    OH all sorts of stuff:

Madman, Tom Strong, Appleseed, Invincible, BPRD, Hellboy, Bone, Ghost In The Shell, Nextwave, Planetary, Dare Detectives, Terra Obscura, Top-10, Scarlet Traces, Patsy Walker: Hellcat, and even She Hulk (Juan Bobillo's art is fucking amazing, and Slott can write the shit out of some shit). And some other stuff.

On the over-sized book bookshelf I've got Keepers of the Maser, Leave it To Chance, Blacksad, and some Love & Rockets (that I can't seem to get into despite loving the art).

The rest are all reference books. Everything from human anatomy, to trees, to steam engines. I'm always looking for quirky picture books.

MG is awesome. I've even got the RPG, which is beautiful. It's chock full of MG world info, so even if you hate RPGs it's an excellent addition to any MG collection. It's full of David's art -old stuff and new, done specifically for the RPG.

  • Scott!

I just added Hellboy, and there will be a very cool addition being added next week. I'll probably take another photo.

I wish I could have a pet tachicoma.

I hope there's a room for Jorge… in your heart.

    Dude! Cyberman head!

Your new work space looks great, Scott.

You and your brother did excellent work.
