Getting Antagonistic

getting-antagonistic

First, the worst news in the world. It looks like the final issue of Volume 6 will not be released this week after all. We’re hoping for next Wednesday, Feb 8th, but we’re not getting our hopes up until we see some shipping lists.

In the meantime, yet more concept art for Volume 7!

Today we’ll take a look at some of our bad guys and their tech.

The Wegs Sez:

Captain Takeshi Hayoto is the main point of contact through which Atomic Robo, the She Devils, and the reader will gain some understanding of the villains and their motivations in this story. He is a darker Kambei Shimada (no relation to Admiral Shimada). Bound to and driven by a code of conduct that is no longer relevant to the world, but which holds him to a particular path as surely as physical restrains could.

I think he is unique to the Atomic Robo Rogue’s Gallery in that he’s not so much a bad person, but a decent person put in an impossible situation. He has depth, unlike a certain dinosaur I could mention…

Hayoto wears the flight suit of a Yatagarasu pilot. It is a G-suit (something new in aviation at this time) and allows him to better withstand the high Gs the Yatagarasu are capable of pulling. As a Navy pilot he carries a kai gunto sword and wears a worn out but still serviceable hachimaki, which was made by his mother.

The Wegs Sez:

JAPANESE SUPER-PLANE! The Yatagarasu are the result of two maddening days spent drawing little sci-fi aircraft before realizing that a totally non-aerodynamic design would do a much better job of highlighting the weird anti-gravity tech being used by the bad guys. The Buckethead (as it is known in my internal head-canon) is part Korean War jet, part Zentradi Battle Pod, and part mechanical duck.

The pilot sits in the cramped armored “head” of the yatagarasu. He views the outside world through a series of monitors (only one is show in the cut-away) which are fed images from recessed cameras. The four primary cameras are located in the front lower hull of the yatagarasu “head”. The controls are part helicopter, part motorcycle, and a great deal of skill is needed to effectively operate the yatagarasu.

Air-to-air, air-to-surface, range finding, and optical sights for the weapon system are located under the “chin”. The yatagarasu mounts a single belt-fed Type 99-2 20mm cannon, which was common in Japanese fighters in the later parts of WWII. Like the first generation jet fighters that are being deployed in Korea at the time of our story, radar and primitive computers are being used to help aim the cannon -aiding the pilot to shoot where his target will be a few seconds into the future, making it easier to score hits. You can see a bit of that here.

Had a great time watching some of these get “created” online. Can’t wait to see how they are used.

I’m relatively new to Atomic Robo and I’ve gotten the digital versions of everything so far. BTW: Thanks so much for the deals on the full volume packages!

I’m waiting almost patiently for the finale of volume 6.  Atomic Robo is soooo on this 40+ year comics fan’s must read list :)

I don’t suppose the estate of Jack Tarot could send Robo another pistol as a keepsake?  But sooooo loving his new field sidearm :)

  • Scott!

Oh yeah, Takeshi is not related to our Admiral S.

Kambei Shimada is a character from Seven Samurai. Which everyone should watch.

  • Scott!

Welcome to our book and thanks for the praise.

Robo’s new gun is a Rhino. They are really cool looking. Google that thing.

I will wait for the final issue until the ends of the earth if I have to. Sigh…so, does this delay the TPB?

Getting way excited for volume 7! Beautiful art! Can’t wait to share the She Devils with my daughter.

  • Scott!

I hope it doesn’t delay the TPB. I need those suckers for ECCC!!!

Is 6.5 going on Comixology at full newsstand price? Will there be an eventual price drop like prior issues? Just curious.

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

I don’t think so. Our deadline for Vol 6 TPB is still on the horizon and we have all the materials we need for it. So, we’re on schedule to get the book to you guys in March.

Our digital issues are never at full print retail price.

I believe Red 5 has been using Vol 6 as a digital pricing experiment. If previous issues in this series dropped in price, then the same will hold for the final issue.

Are you implying Dr. Dinosaur doesn’t have depth?  What about the dramatic strain of knowing all his friends and family are dead?  The grandstanding Greek pathos of the man-dinosaur-scientist stuck out of time — to say nothing of the razor’s-edge sexual tension between he and Robo?
    No depth?
Dr. Dinosaur is one of the deepest wellsprings of thematic import in all of the western canon.

    YOUR WESTERN CANNON…

    … I got nothin’ warmblooded. ;-)

  • Scott!

As usual, I am powerless to argue with Dr. Dinosaur logic.

It’s been a while since I’ve written here, but I’m glad you guys are just as frustrated with the delay as we are. This is the first time I’m picking up Atomic Robo in single issues after going through all the trades. I guess I got spoiled in being able to read one story straight through. Having to wait for the next month to see what happens next was both thrilling and maddening. But when delays happen that’s when it gets frustrating.

Were you guys given a reason why the delay in shipping or is it one of those things that just happen?

Also, will there be more merchandise coming soon?

  • Scott!

I was running late with the art. The final pages, ready for print, were delivered about a week late. There’s some sort of accordion effect at work that turns our delay of one week into a shipping delay of many weeks.

I nominated “Atomic Robo and the Deadly Art of Science” for the Hugo’s graphic-story category. Doing my bit to raise Robo awareness.

  • Scott!

    Awesome. :)
