The Future

Brian!

Yes we did.

Obama’s victory actually throws me for a loop, Robo-wise. There’s not much I can say on the topic because it’d involve huge spoilers that would melt your brain, but let’s just say I’d given up on the political landscape, and in general the future, of this country prior to his campaign. Which, I know, makes me look like a total sap who is easily manipulated by a charismatic figure, but shut up, the guy’s got solid ideas and he’s not a shithead with them. Anyway. Now I have to re-think a subplot. One advantage is that we haven’t laid much (if any) groundwork for this one, so it’s mostly a matter of thinking of what would be cool to do instead.

In the meantime!

Here’s super early sketches for Atomic Robo and the Shadow From Beyond Time #1 that I totally shouldn’t release yet but they make me too giddy to keep secret any longer.

You will earn some serious Robo Points if you can guess who those people are. There is a minor hint over in the timeline.

Scott sent over about three pages filled with concept art for Vol 3 and that’s the least spoilery image I can show you out of the whole batch. Which is a damn shame, ’cause some of this stuff? Oh, man. Oh, man. I feel sorry that you folks have to wait so long to see what we’ve got in store for you. Then again, you’ve got the two best issues of Vol 2 to look forward to, so I think you’ll get by.

    I believe that’s H. P. Lovecraft and Joseph Stalin.

Lovecraft is a given. It looks quite a bit like the illustrations at the beginning of all the Chaosium stuff.

    I think it’s H. G. Wells…

    Aha!

According to Wikipedia, Lovecraft died in the 30s. And the Atomic Robo Timeline says that the Top Secret V3 happened in the 1950s.

Could it be Lovecraft and Charles Fort, who also died in the 30s, and whose Wikipedia photo resembles the above drawing? The title certainly suggests Time Travel shenanigans, which is why I was guessing Wells before. Well, that and the moustache…

I’ll just say that there’s more than one entry hinting at Vol 3 in the timeline. Aaaaaand that could be Fort.

According to the website, there are entries concerning Vol. 3 in the late 1920s, 1950s, and 2008. So 1920s is where I’m going for when these guys were alive. Also, it’s all going to be Helsinguard (which is to Atomic Robo what ‘It’s a Nemesis plot’ is to City of Heroes).

If Lovecraft is involved, does this mean Robo will face off against the fanatic followers of Cthulhu (or another entity like him), and possible go toe-to-tenticle with the dread Squid-head himself? That would definitly shut up those “Robot Hellboy” morons once and for all. Nothing quite says “This is NOT Hellboy” like throwing ancient, otherworldly, giant, demon squid-gods into the mix.

Atomic Robo has never been defined by what Hellboy does or does not do. We can do a Lovecraft story that is distinctly our own.

Besides, Mr. Mignola told us the comparison was inevitable simply because there’s nothing else around to compare us to. Frankly, if we have to be compared to anything, I think we can live with being compared to a juggernaut of independent comics.
