Brian!

What to talk about today?

Hey, reviewers. Did you forget that Atomic Robo and the Dogs of War #4 came out two weeks ago? It’s either that or you’re pretending we don’t exist now. Or maybe it’s just that “New issue of Atomic Robo is great!” isn’t news any more, like how you never hear “Another commercial airliner landed safely today.”

Seriously though, what’s up? We’re a small time indie title. We can’t survive in this market without you guys out there preachin’ it to the masses.

Is it…is it because I insulted your brother? I mean, come on. Dude had a popped collar. This is practically 2009. You can’t tell me I was out of line on that one. He knew the risks when he walked out the door.

This is a fascinating piece of technology. I wonder what implications it’ll have for AI since it seems to recognize and track objects with ease on a PC or laptop when current AI has the utmost difficulty doing that with, presumably, greater processing power. Maybe it’s easier because the whole video is loaded into “memory” or what have you so the program never has to worry about novelty while an actual AI would have to continually deal with the changing world around it. Alternatively, I’m horrified by how credulous members of the public, specifically the voting public, will be endlessly manipulated with this thing. If you thought “Pals around with terrorists” was entirely too effective with no evidence, just wait until they can conjure it!

I can’t believe I linked to something with “Buttmonkey” in the URL. Lord.

Back before the first mini ended, I sent an email to the guy that does "The Buy Pile" for CBR. I was real nice, and even pointed out that while I may not always agree with him, I really appreciated the reasoned arguments he gives for his yea or nay. Then I pointed out Robo, and stated that based on some of the stuff he really seems to enjoy, I thought he might like it, and should at least give it a shot when the trade or second mini came out. The response I got included a thank you, and a promise that while he hadn't yet even heard of the book (this was before the Eisner nomination), it was now officially on his radar, and he would keep an eye out for it. To date, I have yet to see it show up in his article. He does, however, have a line at teh end of the article each week about being able to send him a digital copy a little ahead of time for review. Might be something to look into at least.

When I first saw that popped collar rant on Nuklear Power, I couldn't stop laughing for a good while. Such a simple thing. It's the way to tell 'em, Brian.

That video you linked to was pretty cool. I have no idea when I would use a piece of technology like that, aside from maybe the picture part to make everyone look good, but it's interesting that its being developed none the less.

    Thanks for trying though.

Red 5 usually sends advanced digital copies to reviewers, so I'm not sure what's going on with #4 going completely under everyone's radar. Our regular "little" reviewers, the common folks who go out and buy their comics, hit us up with reviews. Are the big guys too big to pick up their own comics? I honestly don't know. It's like this weird (and sudden) concerted effort to pretend like they haven't been gushing about all our comics for the last 15 months.

Well, just because the reviewers aren't talking about it like they should be, doesn't mean those of us at the LCS level aren't trying. I actually quit the shop I was running a few months ago, and went and started a forum JUST so I could keep talking to people about comics. There are references to books like Robo, Invincible, and Fear Agent all over the place. (Well, and Darkhawk…but that's probably just a sign of mental illness.) Once we get a real website up to go with the community we're slowly building, we're gonna try our hand at some reviews too.

One day I'll get my chance at a Darkhawk mini and you will all see the light. Or the dark. Whatever.

You're in serious danger of taking over the role of being my personal hero from Kirkman. Marvel IS doing a Darkhawk mini in Feb. though. With a hit series and an Eisner nod under your belt, you should totally go for it. Even if it DOES make my head explode.

The issue was so good I recommended it to Robin Williams. (No lie!) Who is now a reader by the way!

In reference to the video stuff and AI, it's not likely to show up in an AI since the software doesn't really understand what's going on (ie it doesn't 'know' what an object is, it's just a bunch of points that 'look' the same in ajacent frames, then the ones that move together form an object, the 'look' the same is probably done using corner detection and some other stuff, but it's really just clever application of techniques that already exist in adobe stuff)
