The first issue of our third volume, Atomic Robo and the Shadow From Beyond Time (FEB094443) is now available for pre-order.

“New York City, 1926. Atomic Robo’s dull night of studying for a physics exam is interrupted by a duo from Nikola Tesla’s past with a dire message: the imminent doom of all life in the universe! Guest starring Charles Fort, Howard Philips Lovecraft, and the Tunguska Incident. This is steampunk science fiction at its finest!”

P.S. there is no steampunk.

Get your local shop to pull it or grab a copy online. As usual, Team Robo endorses Heavy Ink.

This issue is a number of firsts for us. It’ll be our first comic to feature an all new dialog font hand crafted by our very own Jeff Powell. He just finished the lettering tonight and it’s gorgeous. Of course, I’ll have a ton of minor tweaks to the script by the end of the week and make him want to stab me with some kind of ruler that letterers use or something, but that’s our thing.

This is also our first issue to experience the dread horror of the price jump. That’s right. We’re moving up to $3.50 per issue starting with Volume 3. No one at Red 5 Comics or Team Robo is happy about it, but it was the only way to get the math to work out given Diamond’s new policies and the ever-increasing costs of printing and shipping. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that many indie books are already $3.99 and you will see their prices go up from there in the very near future. So, y’know. When you’re at the counter, just remember which title increased its price and stayed below what a great number of indie books were charging before their price increases.

Just tossing that out there!

  • i still don't understand how red5 are able to put books out at the prices they do with barely any ads, and the ones that ARE there are mainly house ads!

looking forward to the new volume, mised the time jumps in the second volume so it's cool to be looking at a different era again
  • My best guess is the relatively low overhead compared to other publishers. We will and have run ads, no question, but we don't NEED them to get by. If Marvel or DC didn't run their ads, they'd probably have to charge twice what they do because of their huge staffs and NYC rent.

I don't mind the price change. I've been getting them on heavyink.com for 2.36, and it's always felt a little like stealing. So much quality for only 2 bucks!
  • So...an on topic statement that doesn't necessarily involve Robo in a tie: Is there going to be a Heavyink alt-cover for the upcoming miniseries? It actually worked out really well for me last time, because I bought the one from my LCS, then bought again from Heavyink, and gave the extra to my brother-in-law, who is now ALSO a fan. Was thinking I might do something similar this time around too.

Oh, and an off-topic question too: If there were ever an Atomic Robo: The Animated Series, who would be your choice to voice him? Who does he sound like in your head? I was just curious.
  • That would be up to Heavy Ink, and I haven't heard anything to that effect yet.

Robo's voice is a tough call. It'd have to be someone who could portray Robo's changes in outlook from the '20s through to modern day. And there's the question of how much distortion do we go with?

Personality-wise, I've always found Timothy Hutton's Archie Goodwin from A&E's Nero Wolfe Mysteries to be very Robo-like, especially in his younger days. Just tone down the accent a bit.
  • I never thought about the distortion level...I guess in my head, I just figured it'd be like Transformers used to do. You know, make him sound kinda like he's talking into a bucket. Interesting choice on the voice. I'm familiar with Hutton, but have to admit I've never seen the particular show in question.

Out of curiosity, if someone wanted to do an alternate cover with you guys, what's the process for that?
  • Alt covers - they just need to contact Red 5 and work out the details. I think one shop got its own personal FCBD variant as well as their own Vol 2, #1.
  • Josh B.
On the voice actor, Billy West doing Skeets in Justice League Unlimited is exactly the voice I read Robo's dialogue in.
  • Congrats on the ALA nod, fellas!
  • You High Moon guys are too good to us!
  • It'd be a value at TWICE the price...or something.

I'm excited for this. Gotta love a Lovecraftian kinda thing...especially when Lovecraft is IN the story. And Robo in a tie just makes me laugh!

Question: did you ever read "Five Fists of Science" from Matt Fraction? If you haven't, I think you'd like it.
  • I have it, but I haven't read it yet! ARGH. I love Fraction, and Sanders, and obviously the concept is right up my alley. Just gotta sit down and make it happen.
  • Too bad you're not here in the midwest and currently buried under 30 feet of snow, you could get some reading in. I think just about all of Indianapolis is closed down today, so I get to spend more quality time on the internet than usual!
  • Josh B.
Damn fine graphic novel. I bought it because of Scott wegener's endorsement, and now I only hope Fraction can extricate himself from Iron Man and what ever else he's on to do more original stuff.
  • I'm an Iron Man dork, so having him on the book has been great.
  • Josh B.
You said everything I was going to say... down to the letter. My thunder has been officially stolen. ; )
