Wherein we talk like morons

Atomic Robo and the Shadow From Beyond Time #5 is now available for pre-order. You should totally check that shit out.

In the meantime, we’ve got a new (ongoing?) feature here at robo.com. We’ve done a couple commentaries on individual issues of Atomic Robo through the magic of instant messaging systems. Today we bring you our first foray into audio commentary. We decided to start with a look at the mysterious origins of Atomic Robo as a concept.

Enjoy!

Here’s some supplemental material. Specifically, here’s some of the original character designs for what would become Atomic Robo. Many (all?) of these can be found in the bonus material for Volume 1: Atomic Robo and the Fightin’ Scientists of Tesladyne

Possibly the first batch.

This is where Scott first planted the seeds that Robo needed to ditch the built-in weaponry. His case: “He looks cooler holding a gun.” Can’t argue with the facts!

I liked the #4 and #5 head, but Scott went with #6 for the final design. The jerk!

I loved the cables-as-musculature in the neck, but we both figured that’d be way too much of a pain in the ass for Scott to draw every single time.

Atomic Robo ver 1.0. We very nearly went with this version, but Scott busted out with the versions linked above after taking a month-long break to draw Killer of Demons #1

That's totally you and Scott on the cover of issue #5 isn't it? Or at least characters drawn to look like you and Scoot.

That's it! I knew the voice I hear in my head reading Robo's dialogue was familiar. It's totally an electronic Bill Murray! Bruce Campbell, he's great, but as Robo – not so much. Bill Murray is definitely the man – er, 'bot.

I dunno…if Bill Murray was Robo, all I'd hear is Garfield.

Loved the podcast…even if it did make me feel rather inadequate, as I realized you guys are MY age, and while you're living the dream, I'm here doing this bullshit. Looking forward to hearing more! I was going to take a second and explain WHY Gravity ended up with the short shrift like he did, but then I realized that nobody really cares…so I won't.

I wouldn't have that problem since I completely avoided the live-action Garfield. Lorenzo Music is the only voice of Garfield.

The hard part about going with any voice is that it won't be the "right" one for a ton of people no matter who it is.

But he was also Venkman in the "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon…hence my problem.

Dude! I had completely forgotten that odd bit of synergy. Garfield is Venkman/Venkman is Garfield. Now my head hurts…

I kind of like to imagine that he sounds a little like Jack Benny, myself…but it's more that I feel like I want Robo to have a sort of good-old-boy kind of voice, he's irreverent but that's because he sounds like a punk kid at times…not because he doesn't know how to talk…

More than Bill Murray, I think I'd want Dan Ackroyd…especially for young Robo. Though well, he's an actor, I'm sure he could pull off an older Robo too.

Or maybe you're just remembering #2: at the very end, he tells the reporter that he can do a great Jack Benny impersonation.

Well that's obviously where I initially got the idea from, yes :)

I thought it was a good fit, basically. Not that Robo does an impression all the time, but that he might naturally sound a little bit that way.

The Darkhawk/Gravity buddy comic is a thing that simply MUST be made.

You guys put on a pretty cool podcast and I'd ove to hear more. Oddly enough, I would also like to hear that 3 hour one (nerd-talk in the background makes for easy work listening).

Love Robo, and the work you guys do. Please keep up the good work.
