In a bold move that stuns no one, Marvel is bringing back Cap.

Well, duh.

I first caught the news from Geeks of Doom, where they report the following…

In an interview with Marvel, Brevoort said that from the moment of Cap’s death, they’ve been planning the story of his return.

I mean, everyone knew this was going to happen, it was only a matter of when. So, y’know, being disappointed about another “dead” character coming back makes as much sense as being disappointed that water still flows downhill.

Still. I’m disappointed.

I dunno. To me, killing Cap off was a ballsy move and that made it interesting. He was a character that Marvel had tried and failed to make relevant for years, possibly decades, and they finally got him a solid run with an acclaimed creative team and A-list sales, and what do they do? They kill the bastard. That’s hardcore anti-cookie-cutter thinking. But bringing him back so soon just turns the whole thing into a by-the-numbers marketing decision that we’ve seen a hundred times before: “Hype death, ride that wave for a couple years, hype return, ride that wave for a couple more, figure out the next big hype event by then, keep doing this until the sun dies.”

I have no doubt that Team Cap can make good comics out of the whole thing, they certainly have so far and there’s no reason to suspect they’d stop now, but I just don’t care any more.

Wait, I thought cap got killed by being sniped or something. How do you come back from that?
  • By being a supersoldier like Cap. Duh! :)

Ya, know. Civil War got me into comics, didn't pay a cent to read it though. Then I started pirating indie stuff.

Then I started buying indie stuff.

I haven't bought anything Marvel forever and after seeing that they are bring back Cap, no way I'm going to.

I was about ready to start reading again in a year because I was almost convinced they were going to keep him in the ground.

I read on CBR, I think, an interesting comment about how Cap is supposed to embody the general feeling of America, and his death was linked to the Bush regime, and his resurrection with Obama's. Kinda makes sense I guess. But then again, his resurrection can also be linked to the 5 issue $3.99 mini-series it can generate.

This is just like the newest deadpool comic. Sure, we all want bulseye to live, and he did, but come on. He got a freaking meat hook through his heart!
  • That justification would almost make sense if Cap's death had happened around the time of Bush's re-election instead of at the very tail end of his second term. Or if Marvel didn't have Colbert win the popular vote and "give" Obama the presidency who then "gave" it to a psychopathic supervillain.

his resurrection can also be linked to the 5 issue $3.99 mini-series it can generate.

    DING DING DING
  • Well, let's face it...was there ANYBODY that really thought that Bucky would still be Cap by the time the movie started filming, even?
  • The answer is in the title! ;D

    "DING DING DING"

Ice cream man! Ice cream man!
  • See, when I hear/see the word "DING", all I can think is: "Fries are done!" That stupid song gets stuck in my head at the drop of a hat.

Hey, Sr. Clevenger, just saw you mention computer repairs on Twitter...I'd bet you've got some IT-type people around here that might be able to help bring that cost down. What'cha need done?

Didn't Captain America become just a slightly better than normal soldier since the super soldier vaccine was given to a guy with polio? I mean what the hell is the point in the first place? The only Cap product I ever liked was the made for t.v. movie in the eighties. And, I mean, it was the eighties, I was allowed to like it. Also didn't he get frozen in ice for forty years or some other such nonsense? This is why I hate American mainstream media. Comics, movies, t.v.; they all have the same tendency toward westernized sociological thought, wherein, a vincible protagonist ends up beating the odds to be an essential immortal. In eastern plot lines main characters die all the time. It makes for a more credible story. We all deal with the cycles of life and death and the craziness in between, but in Hollywood, or the Marvel universe, there can be no end. Its just bloody unnatural.

^I'll take American mainstream media over Eastern mainstream media any day of the week. Ressurection and apple pie over tentacle rape, I always say.

The overcoming of odds and ascension to betterment is a classic trope of fiction, not just Western media.

I know what you're saying, I guess I just want to see anything have an ending. I can't stand how addicted everyone seems to be to the concept that even if there is a sad ending, something will come up and negate it. Just as a further addendum, I would like to express my discontent with any country's mainstream corporate backdrop. I like the underground; generally lower production quality, but at least there's room to think.
  • I tend to agree, so it's ironic that Atomic Robo never has to end.
