Sketchy Business

So this has been the week were I catch up on all the commissions, concept art, random sketches, and other bullshit that piles up while I am working on Robo. I thought I’d post the stuff I’ve done for you guys to enjoy since the gallery back on scottwegener.com is sort of dead.

Real quick though, Major Spoilers did a nice review of Atomic Robo 3.3.

This first one was a “One Minute Later Commission”. You take an old cover and then imagine what happens next.

Here’s the original.

And here’s what I did.

One-Minute-Cyclops

This Robotech piece was for Christina Strain who did an amazing job coloring our Atomic Robo convention banner.

Robotech

I did this next one for the Jenny Everywhere Day. I did a Jenny Everywhere story back in the day with Jason Frank and I sort of fell in love with the idea of an open-source comic book character.

JennyEverywhere

Then I moved on to some “My god is better than your god.” art battle thing. I don’t really understand it, so don’t ask me to explain. Anyway, my god is “The Great Turtlenecked Sagan” who uses science and logic to disprove the existence of all the other gods. Sadly this works against him as well, so Carl vanishes in a puff of logic at the end of the debate.

Carl

And finally in preparation for the Digital Robo story I am starting today I did some concept sketches and a pencil test for Ronda to color so we can see what looks best.

Digital Monsta

Robo Test 1

OH yeah almost forgot. Found this last one while I was scanning all this other stuff last night.

  • You’re a Brian, He’s a Brian,

The over-muscled, be-horned, red-eyed newt-thingy seems to be packing quite the sock in his jockeys. :-)

I think that’s supposed to be its stomach, but as a fellow Brian, I agree.

Leave it to a Brian to zero right in on that single detail.

Wow. Your 2nd picture really took me back to the days when I spent hours upon hours playing robotech:battlecry. At first I thought “Did he just do some 40k tau art? omg its robotech! :D

Really great stuff. The “thigh” of the mech in that second drawing has some nice sweet curves to it.

@Ben: What would have elevated Battle Cry from a mediocre game that had little appeal to anyone who wasn’t a fan of the show to something totally awesome, would have been a solid multi-player component.

12-on-12 Veritech-vs-Zentradi power armor battles? That would have been magical.

I might have to go buy that game again just to see the awesome cell shading.

@Lauren: YEah the Queadluun-Rau suit is very organic. All curves, and only piloted by the female elite Meltrandi. Very hot. :)

Christina needs to color that so we can sell prints of it to anime nerds!

    @Scott!

And a less-clunky feel to controlling said Veritech.

Robotech: Invasion DOES have the multiplayer, but only with the cyclones. A pity.

BTW, I took liberties with the monsta. I hope you don’t mind. http://bit.ly/2G44aW

(Would it be cool to use as coloring sample on my art page?)

Veeeerrrry cool, diverse stuff. Love the ’1 minute later’ drawing, and the concept of it (the idea of the project as a whole, I mean)

Nice job. Yeah feel free to stick it on your website.

I thought the veritech controls were okay once I got used to them.

Robotech: Invid just plain sucked. :P

  • ScottWegna

Yeah that was a new one to me and I loved doing it.

A little late commenting on this one, but I really liked that Jenny Everywhere story, and I also really like the Jenny Everywhere concept. Just FYI (if you didn't know), your Jenny comic is now available in print from IndyPlanet:
