Atomic Robo Vol 4, Issue #2 — Go’n and git it!

Brian!

So, check it.

Atomic Robo and the Revenge of the Vampire Dimension #2 of 4 comes out Wednesday! Here’s the low down and/or the down low. I’m not hip enough to know the difference or if there is one.

Japan, 1999. ATOMIC ROBO visits SCIENCE TEAM SUPER FIVE, the Tesladyne of the East. It’s a perfectly ordinary business trip where nothing incredibly stereotypical like A GIANT MONSTER ATTACK happens. Robo just does some sightseeing. That’s all. Stop thinking about GIANT MONSTER ATTACKS. That’d be silly.

And here’s a five page preview. Six if you count the inside cover and I don’t.

But wait, there’s more!

This Friday, at the Mondo Marvel panel at C2E2, we’ll finally announce the mini-series I’m writing for Marvel comics this summer and I can stop being so goddamn tight-lipped about it! Okay, there’s no way that was worth making you click through to read this, but how else was I going to trick you into leaving a comment?

New issue looks great. I'm going to assume its intentional that they look like the Power Rangers?

Oh, and whose “Dr. Shinka?”. Oh well, I guess I'll figure it out when I get the Trade paperback.

  • michaelk42

Kids today, no science ninja team homage appreciation. Power Rangers indeed.

  • Josh_B

As cool as it is to finally get the next issue of Robo, I would like to take this opportunity to declare how awesome it is that Dave Flora has contributed to the Roboverse. Gorgeous stuff.

  • BeastieRunner

I've been a fan since before the first issue came out. I'll always be a huge Robo fan BUT I am happy to read that you're doing a mini for Marvel. Considered it pulled!

Any chance of a Robo/Spidey crossover someday!?

  • Mike

    It worked for Invincible!

(I just hope the series Marvel's got you writing isn't something like Machine Man…because I could see them doing something like that.)

  • BeastieRunner

It'd be the first time I'd read a Machine Man comic and like it.

  • michaelk42

    Hey hey now – http://www.the-isb.com/?p=152

Sadly I had that bit of comedy handy.

  • Josh_B

Machine Man was created by Jack Kirby, and when he was done with him, Ditko took over. Then he floated around in the ether until used by Warren Ellis in Nextwave. All told, Machine Man has a pretty damn impressive track record.

  • Scott!

    I know, right?

Actually, I wanted more of a Gatchaman vibe, but Brian made a stronger case for Power Rangers. So I saved the Gatchaman love for that single panel flashback of your Dr. Yumeno.

  • Scott!

Why would you expect us to explain . . .wait . . .

YES! Buy the TPB. All your questions will be answered there.

  • Scott!

Dave Flora is the fucking Man.

  • michaelk42

It's OK. Go back far enough and the Power Rangers-type show goes back to the original live-action Japanese Spiderman show, anyway.

    THAT gets weird.

  • michaelk42

I really liked Machine Man when I was a kid, and never saw him again until Nextwave.

He and ROM just don't any respect. XD

  • BeastieRunner

I wish they'd do a new Rom series but they don't have the license. It was nice to see the Space Knights in Annihilation, though.

I could see Brian on Agents of Atlas or Guardians of the Galaxy. Friday can't come soon enough!

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

I'll be a jerk and say that something I'm writing for Marvel kind of involves Machine Man.

But that has nothing to do with the project that'll be announced tomorrow!

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

    (heart) Dave Flora.

  • michaelk42

    Oh snap!

  • BCarbaugh

So for those of us who won't be at C2E2, any plans to announce here? Or do I have to google a bunch of…marvel blogs? *shudder*

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

    Yeah, I'll propagate the news.

  • yayap91

Now I know you guys might have been making a 40k reference with the “dakka dakka dakka” from Jenkins' gun in vol. 4 issue #1, but was that big laser rifle a Tau firewarraior rifle reference? Just asking…

Great issue, can't wait for more Dr. Dinosaur up next!

  • Mike

Don't get me wrong, I have every confidence that you writing Machine Man would kick all kinds of ass, but as a character…well, he's a grumpy, wisecracking, robot who's been around for a long time and tends to be in the center of whatever mayhem he's around.

He's been hanging around in Marvel Zombies recently though. If you were to write Marvel Zombies, I'd definitely start buying it again!

  • Josh_B

Geez, that's be a whole different level of nerd. Ork cries are one thing, but communist fishmen guns? ;)

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

You have no idea how many times my scripts have suggested Tau weaponry, generally Pulse Rifles or Carbines. This is just the first time Scott relented. My theory is that he was completely broken on the inside. Drawing this extra-long issue over the holidays was Scott's version of the “There are four lights!” episode of TNG.

  • BeastieRunner

    He speaks Marvelnese now!

SHIELD, Avengers, Secret Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Nextwave, and Heavy Metal all have something that kind of involves Machine Man.

    MODOK!?

  • Justin

Hey Brian, you're not actually at C2E2, are you? Cause if you were I'd run over there right now.

  • http://www.fakemccoy.com Ziggy

    INFINITY GAUNTLET!

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

I'm not. You should go anyway, there's an amazing line up of talent over there.

  • prepare4drop

I'll be honest I was hoping that, since you were going a issue set in Japan, you would poke fun at some of the more popular anime of the 90's… Are you?

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

Nope. It's a strictly super sentai kind of issue. Scott and I more like '80s and early '90s anime nerds anyway.
