We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

Lets start with a quick Public Service Announcement: To the dude that commissioned and paid for a sketch of Robo juxtaposed against what is probably the most delicious food group on Earth: you forgot to pick up your sketch! I’ve still got it and would be happy to mail it to you. Leave a comment below and I will get in touch with you.

END PSA. On to the blargh.

I’m sorry Boston. It’s not you. It’s me. I feel like we’re smothering each other. I just need some space. Lets be friends.

Oh. My. God. Two intense conventions, in two weeks, in the same city. It’s borderline nerd abuse. I can’t even describe how tired I am right now.

The Boston ComiCon was -in a word- Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

While I did feel a little jipped, (by which I mean relieved), not having to work a twelve and a half hour long shift in Artist’s Alley, BCC was basically a repeat performance of AB the weekend before.

I am now completely, 100%, and utterly sold out of Atomic Robo TPBs. My SCIENCE shirt stock is also seriously depleted. People loved the mulberry shirts -even if they felt retarded buying a shirt which is neither red, nor purple, but mulberry. If I did’t feel like a dick wearing my own merchandise, I’d totally rock the Frankenberry-colored Tesla SCIENCE shirt.

The volume of traffic at BCC was surprising and impressive. I’ve been attending the show since it opened its doors a few years ago, and its always been a busy venue. But this weekend’s turn out put previous shows to shame. I heard that the convention reached capacity several times on Saturday and people had to wait outside for folks to leave, just so they could get in. This isn’t really surprising considering the A-List guests that were in attendance. Jim Lee, Mike Mignola, and Eric Powell -just to name a few. Next year they’re going to need an even bigger space!

My table was flanked be the awesome Craig Rousseou and Norman Lee. Both really swell eggs. Got to chat with Mignola and Chris Golden a bit. Chris wrote the intro to the Vol.3 TPB, and I was able to give him a set of Robo trades. Mike is a really nice guy. Down to earth. Last year at SDCC Dorinda tried to meet him three or four times. Every time she went over to his table though, he wasn’t there. On the fourth trip I went with her and we got there as Mike was trying to beat a hasty retreat from a fangirl who was trying to lunge at him across his table and give him a hug. Mike and his wife made hurried excuses about a prior engagement and took off. They never noticed us standing there quietly just waiting to say a quick hello, and Dorinda’s feelings were unintentionally hurt.

So I’m talking with Mike and Chris when my phone rings and it’s Dorinda. I ask her to hold for a second and I pass the phone to Mike, saying, “My wife thinks your kind of an asshole. Would you say hi to her?” Hilarity ensued.

I guess that’s about it. Rob, Liz, Lauren, Sara, and everyone else -it was great to see you guys. I wish I’d had the actual energy and time to hang out. Thanks to Pat and Double Midnight for getting me that set of Vol.1 comics! They lasted for about five seconds before someone bought the lot. LOL

PS: Got to play with Rousseou’s iPad on Sunday. Atomic Robo looked amazing on it. Despite my intense dislike of Apple’s corporate policies I REALLY REALLY want one of these things.

Scott – Craig had an iPod, not an iPad.

    Hi Scott,
I just want to thank you again for the print. I am the guy that was running the table across the way and it really did mean a lot to the lot of us with it being our first con and all. Hope I get an opportunity to see you at a con again in the future!

  • Scott!

So I'm prepping my taxes yesterday, thinking about actually visiting my accountant this morning, glow bowling with Brownies on Saturday, (the stupid candle-pin fake-bowling, not even the “good” kind), and having to come home and clean my house for company on Sunday.

Is it wrong to be wishing there was another 3-day con I had to go to next weekend?

  • Mike

I'm willing to set one up in my living room if you want to come out to Indiana. It'd be a pretty small convention, but the table rate'd be awesome!

  • Mike

(You know, reading that back…can I just say that I meant that to be more “funny” than “creepy”?)

What a coincidence. I just wrote a review of the latest New Avengers Military Exclusive comic and said that Craig Rousseau's art gave me a sense of fun today's comics don't have outside of Atomic Robo. And then I read you guys were hanging out at a convention together. Weird.

The last time I slept on a strange man's couch bad things happened. . . .so bad. =(

  • Scott!

Craig does a lot of Marvel Adventures work, which, for my money, is where the fun and creativity is to be found. The regular Marvel U stuff is fine, but it works under so many restrictions and has to toe the line of whatever mega-event is happening at the time.

Adventure stuff, on the other hand, is all about being fun and getting new young readers into comics.

    YOU TAKE COMMISIONS??!

  • Jay("The Dude")

Hey just stopping by the blog and saw this. I'm that guy that got that commission and couldn't get back to grab it. Dumplings are the most delicious food group. I'm pretty sure 2 or 3 servings is the daily recommended amount. If you still have it sent me an e-mail. Thanks again.

  • Scott!

    That;s totally you! =D
