FCBD 2010 -Well, It’s No Dr. Dinosaur . . .

. . .Yet surprisingly, most people seemed to like the Terror Bird story. Brian and I have known for a year now that when we released the Dr. Dinosaur story in 2009 that what we’d really done was set ourselves up for criticism this year. Yet, for the most part, I’ve been getting nothing but positive reviews of Atomic Robo & The Flight of The Terror Birds. Multiversity Comic’s brief review pretty well sums up the general feelings on the Internet.

There was one thread on a forum that I drop in on every now and then that complained that it was really rather disappointing, and seemed to imply that we’d done ourselves some great disservice by not recreating the magic that is a retarded fake dinosaur that insists he’s a time traveler, but in reality is just an insane little monster.

I’m not exactly sure what nerve these comments hit. Maybe it was just the oppressive heat and humidity that rolled into town this weekend. Maybe it was just the early hour and lack of caffeine. But I broke the Golden Rule of Internet pseudo-Celebrity and I responded to it, albeit in a semi-anonymous way, since my “handle” on this non-work related forum is “Atomic Scotsman”, and I don’t think I have anything there directly linking me to Robo. Though I could be wrong about that. My intent was simply to poke fun at the complaints, and everything is said with a big shit-eating grin on my face. Not the usual vicious malice that you might expect. What I said was this:

:(  Right? This year’s 100% free of charge, no expense to you, all you have to do is walk to the comic shop and grab a copy, FCBD ATOMIC ROBO story was so fucking lame.

The nerve of those assholes.
.
Do they think I give a rat’s ass that they put weeks of effort into providing me with an original Atomic Robo story crafted specifically for FCBD?
.
Well think again you Team Robo morons.
.
If they had any sense at all they would have just reprinted last year’s FCBD story, or at least churned out more of the same. It works for some much larger companies. Who cares about the larger Robo world? Not me. I want more Dr. Dinosaur! That reptile should have his owe mini-series, damnit. They could have saved themselves a lot of work, and me the effort of complaining about their FREE SHIT on the Internet if they’d just pandered to my need for more robot-on-dinosaur action.”
.
I guess we’ll see how that plays out. Probably not very well for me. :)
.
As one or two people in New England may have noticed, I didn’t do anything for FCBD this year. It’s not that I didn’t want to. I love FCBD. But Dorinda was running her first 5k race that same day, and I would be a horrible husband if I didn’t tag along to support her. I briefly toyed with the idea of doing an afternoon signing somewhere after the race, but decided that was probably a bad idea. This was her big day and I didn’t want to take away from that in any way. She ended up beating her standing 5k time by a significant margin, and I’m very proud of her.
.
I took some pics, but as I can’t figure out how to get them off my Droid, I can’t share them with you yet. :P
.
We had an awesome time out in Dover, and we did pop into Jetpack Comics on our way home to say a quick hello. The shop’s owner, Ralph, is a great guy and has ALWAYS bent over backwards to hook me up and help me out. The least I could do was stop in and sign whatever Robo books he had. But Ralph is a shrewd operator and he made FCBD a community wide event by spreading his FCBD titles all across town and getting other businesses in on the event. FCBD in Rochester NH was a scavenger hunt, and they couldn’t have had a better day for getting people to walk all over town, checking out the various shops, and picking up their free comics.
.
Last week I finally had a chance to take care of some commissions that have been sitting on the back burner for months. I’ll get them out in the mail soon. I also got started on the cover for the Vol.4 TPB -I’ll probably post images of that later today when it’s all finished.
.
Here are those commissions:

JOHN CONSTANTINE
ROBO  -vs- KARATE KID
Recreation of CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 with ATOMIC ROBO (original underneath). The pencils were hard to scan cleanly because of all the shading, but you get the general idea.

I gotta find one of those Net Nanny things that makes it impossible for you to sign up to forums.

  • http://serge-lj.livejournal.com Serge

Nothing special to say, except to repeat that I love your work, guys, and I've corrupted a 15-year-old into discovering it.

  • http://serge-lj.livejournal.com Serge

And, no, I didn't go by the comics store on Saturday. Waugh!

  • yayap91

    I can't believe it.
“Lets get in line early!” I say.
“Nah, there's no rush.” My brother says.
*They run out of robo a full hour before I get there*

  • Featherweight

man hitlers tougher than he look a shurg like that form robo must be like getting hit by a train but he only look mildly upset…

  • Josh_B

Well, I dug it, as per. Especially Robo's physicist puns. That kind of thing should not make me laugh as much as it does. :)

Also, whoever commisioned the Captain America cover recreation is a lucky guy. That's damn fine.

  • derg

The picture of Atomic Robo punching Hitler in the face is awesome.

  • http://thatdangblog.blogspot.com/ StupidSmarch

I got stuck in college, all the atomic robo comics were taken :( Damn education always screwin me over.

Robo punching a giant bird in the face made my FCBD. Who hasn't wanted to punch a long-necked bird in the face, just to see the sheer physics of it?

  • AntonOlsen

    Scott,

Seriously, people were ripping on the story?

I loved it. Thought it was awesome. I went to FCBD expecting to find an original Atomic Robo story, and was not disappointed at all.

    Thanks!
    Anton

There's just no pleasing some people.

  • michaelk42

DCBS managed to move out of bike range on me and my car is still broken down in the shop even as I type. Dammit FCBD. :(

The internet seems to be built for people to anonymously bitch about things they really have no place bitching about. Because anonymous bitching on the internet fixes things somehow, I guess. Criminy.

So who's idea was Death in the hourglass there? And Jenkins is killing me there. XD

  • EthanFowler

Great stuff Scott and Brian! I liked this issue as much as, if not more than, last year's. I think the internet just has a huge nerd-on for the so-entirely-implausible-that-it-wraps-all-the-way-back-'round-and-makes-sense stuff (see: Ninja Pirate Zombie Robots (did I get that right?)) and Dr. Dinosaur. I love the guy too but if he started showing up too frequently I think Atomic Robo would lose a lot of its charm. The just-regular-implausibility of Robo fighting giant Japanese monsters works well too I think. (Great issue, by the way).

Also gotta echo Michael's thoughts on the hourglass and Jenkins. Keep up the great work, both o' y'all!

  • Sed

If it's any consolation, I only learned of Atomic Robo this FCBD – and I've already become a big fan just by reading the copies of previous FCBD issues that you have posted here on the site.

My next trip to my LCS, I'll definitely be looking for Atomic Robo!

  • BeastieRunner

Would you get sued if you guys did a homage cover like that Hitler commission? Because that is totally awesome. I'd buy 5 copies to give away to friends. Everybody loves pictures of Hitler getting punched!

  • yayap91

I finally got my copy today. Even though FCBD is well over, My LCS gave me a leftover copy they found in the basement anyway.

I think it was great, with a nice little TF2 reference to make TF2 fans like me happy :)

From the books description though, I was guessing the bird would be an UP reference, but I didn't get that impression after reading.

Great (free) book overall. Even though the birds were not as entertaining as Dr. Dinosaur, I thought it was easily in my top 3 books of FCBD. Haters gonna hate.

    *record scratch noise*
    *tires screeching*
*other sound effects to suggest a sudden stop*

You were in Rochester on FCBD?! Aw man, late to pick it up AND to get it signed!

  • JustinB_1

I'm RELATIVELY sure Einstein faced similar criticism. “Unified Forces? Meh. It's no Theory of Relativity.”

By the time you guys got to Heisenberg, I was laughing out loud.

Great issue and the cover was one of the best ever!

My copy came yesterday. I don't see what people were griping about – I thought it was pretty great. Besides, as Terrence!! said above, seeing Robo punch a giant bird in the face was hilarious in its own right.
