. . .Yet surprisingly, most people seemed to like the Terror Bird story. Brian and I have known for a year now that when we released the Dr. Dinosaur story in 2009 that what we’d really done was set ourselves up for criticism this year. Yet, for the most part, I’ve been getting nothing but positive reviews of Atomic Robo & The Flight of The Terror Birds. Multiversity Comic’s brief review pretty well sums up the general feelings on the Internet.
There was one thread on a forum that I drop in on every now and then that complained that it was really rather disappointing, and seemed to imply that we’d done ourselves some great disservice by not recreating the magic that is a retarded fake dinosaur that insists he’s a time traveler, but in reality is just an insane little monster.
I’m not exactly sure what nerve these comments hit. Maybe it was just the oppressive heat and humidity that rolled into town this weekend. Maybe it was just the early hour and lack of caffeine. But I broke the Golden Rule of Internet pseudo-Celebrity and I responded to it, albeit in a semi-anonymous way, since my “handle” on this non-work related forum is “Atomic Scotsman”, and I don’t think I have anything there directly linking me to Robo. Though I could be wrong about that. My intent was simply to poke fun at the complaints, and everything is said with a big shit-eating grin on my face. Not the usual vicious malice that you might expect. What I said was this:
”
Right? This year’s 100% free of charge, no expense to you, all you have to do is walk to the comic shop and grab a copy, FCBD ATOMIC ROBO story was so fucking lame.
The nerve of those assholes.
.
Do they think I give a rat’s ass that they put weeks of effort into providing me with an original Atomic Robo story crafted specifically for FCBD?
.
Well think again you Team Robo morons.
.
If they had any sense at all they would have just reprinted last year’s FCBD story, or at least churned out more of the same. It works for some much larger companies. Who cares about the larger Robo world? Not me. I want more Dr. Dinosaur! That reptile should have his owe mini-series, damnit. They could have saved themselves a lot of work, and me the effort of complaining about their FREE SHIT on the Internet if they’d just pandered to my need for more robot-on-dinosaur action.”
.
I guess we’ll see how that plays out. Probably not very well for me.
.
As one or two people in New England may have noticed, I didn’t do anything for FCBD this year. It’s not that I didn’t want to. I love FCBD. But Dorinda was running her first 5k race that same day, and I would be a horrible husband if I didn’t tag along to support her. I briefly toyed with the idea of doing an afternoon signing somewhere after the race, but decided that was probably a bad idea. This was her big day and I didn’t want to take away from that in any way. She ended up beating her standing 5k time by a significant margin, and I’m very proud of her.
.
I took some pics, but as I can’t figure out how to get them off my Droid, I can’t share them with you yet.

We had an awesome time out in Dover, and we did pop into
Jetpack Comics on our way home to say a quick hello. The shop’s owner, Ralph, is a great guy and has ALWAYS bent over backwards to hook me up and help me out. The least I could do was stop in and sign whatever Robo books he had. But Ralph is a shrewd operator and he made FCBD a community wide event by spreading his FCBD titles all across town and getting other businesses in on the event. FCBD in Rochester NH was a scavenger hunt, and they couldn’t have had a better day for getting people to walk all over town, checking out the various shops, and picking up their free comics.

Last week I finally had a chance to take care of some commissions that have been sitting on the back burner for months. I’ll get them out in the mail soon. I also got started on the cover for the Vol.4 TPB -I’ll probably post images of that later today when it’s all finished.
.
Here are those commissions:

JOHN CONSTANTINE
ROBO -vs- KARATE KID
Recreation of CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 with ATOMIC ROBO (original underneath). The pencils were hard to scan cleanly because of all the shading, but you get the general idea.
