Brian!
robo-vol-4-tpb-is-out-now-aaaaaaah

This came out today.

Among the vampires and ghosts and giant monsters, it also features the next 22 pages of this story.

The next volume, Atomic Robo and the Deadly Art of Science, starts in November but the first two issues are already available for pre-order locally or online!

They look like this.

And this.

Issue 2 there has the distinction of featuring the weirdest solicitation text I’ve ever written. Behold!

JACK TAROT, Scourge of the Chicago Crime Syndicate, stalks the mean streets of New York City hunting down the truth behind a baffling series of high-tech robberies! Though if he knew that’d involve mentoring ATOMIC ROBO, he’d have stayed home. Hey, what’s Jack hiding behind that mask? And how does he shoot with it on anyway, I don’t see no eye-holes! Also starring Jack’s beautiful organic daughter! And a man with two skulls! And Tesla! And vampires! Again! But only a little. Every issue brings us one step closer to uncovering the secrets of THE DEADLY ART OF SCIENCE!

I’m still surprised you guys are actually going to show Tesla’s face.

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

Yeah, we tried thinking of how to tell this story such that the reader always “just misses” Tesla, but it didn’t fly.

  • MetalsMike

Cannot wait to pick this up! Tomorrow for me! Yay!

  • Ben S.

Grabbed my copy today! Don’t mind you guys showing Tesla, otherwise my brain would just sub in David Bowie from The Prestige anyway. I like that film, but it’s really neat to see your version of him.

Also my favorite part of that solicitation for some reason is “beautiful organic daughter.” Made me laugh!

“Don’t mind you guys showing Tesla, otherwise my brain would just sub in David Bowie from The Prestige anyway.”

Hah, me too. I love when comics incorporate historical figures, especially when I care about the people, ala Tesla, Lovecraft and Sagan. Human history is populated with figures far more interesting than most fictional characters, so why not make use of that. If only Robo could meet up with Mark Twain…

With more Tesla face-time, will you be touching on his famous irrational fear of peas?

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

We will touch on Tesla’s unusual eating habits, but I hadn’t heard of that one.

  • Daniel

I haven’t heard of his fear of peas but I know he has an aversion of circular objects and hair.

  • Daniel

So why exactly did you guys try to avoid showing Tesla’s face? Sorry if this has been answered previously.

  • http://www.nuklearpower.com Brian!

We really liked the idea of Tesla being this almost mythic figure. You’d always see his influence on the world, but never the man himself. But Vol 5 doesn’t work if we do that with it.

There’s not much about it online, but I read an interview in the latest issue of Empire Magazine with Eli Roth; in it he’s asked “What’s your specialist subject?” and he replies:

“Nikola Tesla. I spent six years researching Tesla for David Lynch, so I actually went to the Library Of Congress and got every single hand-written lettter from Tesla, and I realised that I was one of maybe ten people in the world that had all this information…..My favourite thing about Tesla was his fear of peas. He would not look at peas, he couldn’t touch peas, he was terrified of them. He said he wouldn’t look at peas even if he was at punpoint.”

Also, this quote: “Nikola had shot a pea at Dane’s horse, causing it to throw the young man. His brother’s resulting death may have been a catalyst for a number of unusual characteristics that developed in Tesla over his lifetime.” from this website http://www.poindexter.com/geniuses/nikola-tesla

And it’s just fucking brilliant! (The vol. 4 Trade that is.) Especially loved Dr. Dinosaur! It’s fun, it’s so much fun. (Only thing I was wondering was, the Dinosaur doesn’t have opposable thumbs, so how does he hold/build things? Well I guess his intellect is so big that he doesn’t need opposable thumbs…)
